Stepping Beyond Our Gates: Finding Wonder in Our Community

At Waves, learning is not something that lives only within our walls. It lives in the paths we walk, the places we visit, the people we meet, and the moments of shared discovery along the way. Our community is an extension of our learning environment, rich with stories, possibilities, and moments of wonder waiting to be noticed.

Connecting with our local community through excursions has been a long-held dream at Waves and a passion project close to my heart, Miss Nikki. Having experienced the joy, confidence, and deep sense of belonging that community excursions can bring at other services across the shire, I have always believed in their power. There is something truly special about watching children light up as they recognise familiar places, wave to passers-by, or realise that they are an important part of the world around them.

Our journey toward excursions began back in 2024. Since then, our team has paused, reflected, and dreamed together. Through thoughtful critical reflection and planning, we have worked carefully to ensure excursions at Waves feel meaningful, safe, and aligned with our values. This has been a slow and considered process—one guided by listening to children, supporting educators, and honouring the trust of our families.

Each excursion will grow from the children’s interests and projects, weaving learning beyond the classroom and into real-life experiences. Whether exploring a nearby park, visiting familiar community spaces, or following children’s curiosities outdoors, these moments will extend their thinking and invite new questions, conversations, and connections. Learning becomes something lived, not just talked about.

As we move through our community together, children will also be supported to build an understanding of road and traffic safety in meaningful, hands-on ways. Holding hands, stopping to listen, watching the flow of traffic, and noticing signs all become part of the learning—gentle lessons in awareness, care, and responsibility that support children’s growing independence.

Our approach is deeply inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy, which reminds us that the environment is a powerful teacher. By stepping beyond our gates, we open the door to endless possibilities—inviting children to wonder, to question, and to see themselves as capable explorers of their world. Excursions offer children opportunities to connect ideas, form relationships, and experience learning as something joyful and alive.

Most of all, excursions create magic. They spark excitement, shared laughter, quiet observations, and moments of awe. They remind us to slow down, notice the small things, and see our community through the curious eyes of a child.

We are so excited to begin this next chapter at Waves—walking alongside our children as they discover their world, build connections, and find joy in the journey. Together, we look forward to creating memories filled with wonder, belonging, and meaningful learning, both within Waves and beyond.
